Onigiri (Rice Balls)

Our Onigiri and Nori Wrapped Sardine feast

Onigiri rice balls are one of those comfort finger foods that are fun to make, fun to eat, and surprisingly filling and delicious. The key is to be experiment with seasonings and fillings and make them interesting!

Ingredients

  • 1 cups sushi rice cooked, cooled enough that you can touch it
  • Your favorite Furikake (rice seasoning) to taste
  • water and salt
  • Nori – cut into small rectangles

Instructions

Put your cooked sushi rice into a large mixing bowl – add your favorite furikake and mix through evenly.

Wet your hands with water and rub together with a pinch or two of salt. This stops the rice sticking to your hands and helps keep it fresh.

Pick up one handful of rice. This is the moment when you can add fillings inside if you want, You can add all sorts of things, from meats and fish to vegetables. Experiment! To add a filling, make an indent, place the ingredients inside and fold the rice over, then lightly press into a ball.

Using mainly your fingertips while resting the rice on your palm, start to press and squeeze the rice into a triangular shape, rotating as you go so it’s even.

Place a slice of nori on the bottom of the onigiri, rough side in towards the rice. Then fold it up towards to the middle of the onigiri.

Repeat for the remaining rice portions.

This could easily be a completely vegetarian meal, but we served ours with sliced fruit and nori wrapped teriyaki sardines (soooo good!).

For ours, we used JFC-Nori Komi Furikake (Rice Seasoning). This variety is simple and delicious, made of sesame seeds, seaweed flakes, salt and sugar. Other furikake varieties include salmon, shiso, wasabi, mushrooms, and bonito fish. Try them till you find the one you love!
